Former presidential aspirant and cleric, Tunde Bakare, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s influence over the National Assembly, calling on him to “stop playing God.”
Bakare, who is the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, made the comments during his State of the Nation address in Lagos on Sunday. In his address, he said President Tinubu’s style of politics is weakening legislative oversight and threatening Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the country is too fragile for such governance.
He accused the National Assembly of acting like an extension of the executive, saying it has become a “rubber stamp” for the President’s agenda. Bakare expressed concern that the principle of separation of powers is being eroded, warning that the nation’s democracy is under threat.

He also described the 10th National Assembly as “the most spineless in recent history,” and criticised recent decisions including the approval of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
According to him, “the National Assembly has, in effect, become the 48th member of the president’s cabinet.”
Bakare urged President Tinubu to reflect, warning that “no man is wise enough nor good enough to be trusted with unlimited power.”
