Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has criticised recent street and bus stop renamings in Lagos State, calling them unconstitutional and a breach of local government powers.
In a statement issued Saturday, Falana accused individuals and local council officials of usurping the exclusive constitutional authority of local governments to name roads and public spaces. He cited the renaming of the iconic ‘Charley Boy Bus Stop’ to ‘Baddo Bus Stop’ and the naming of streets after President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, and the late Herbert Wigwe—allegedly without proper legal process.

Mr. Falana argued that such actions erase local identity and disregard community voices. He urged legislative councils across Lagos to resist arbitrary renamings and adopt lawful, consultative procedures rooted in the Constitution and past judicial rulings.
