Sudan Appeals For Aid After Landslide Kills 1,000 in Darfur

Sudan has appealed for urgent international aid after a landslide wiped out an entire village in Central Darfur’s Marrah Mountains, killing more than 1,000 people. The Sudan Liberation Movement, which controls the area, said the village of Tarasin was completely levelled after days of heavy rainfall.

The group said only one person survived and called on the United Nations and aid organisations to help recover bodies and support survivors. Local emergency workers said bad weather and limited resources were hindering rescue efforts.

Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council in Khartoum said it mourned the victims and pledged to mobilise all available resources for the disaster-hit area. UN humanitarian coordinator Luca Renda said he was deeply saddened and confirmed that the UN and its partners were moving to support affected communities.

The disaster comes as Sudan continues to grapple with a brutal civil war that has displaced millions and strained humanitarian aid. Aid groups warn that reaching remote regions like Darfur remains extremely difficult due to insecurity and poor infrastructure.
