Sudanese prime minister calls for RSF to be labelled ‘terrorist’ group

Sudan’s Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, has called on the international community to designate the Rapid Support Forces as a terrorist organisation following reports of mass killings and atrocities in Darfur. Idris told Al Jazeera that the violence, if unchecked, could destabilise the wider African region.

His comments come after the RSF seized El-Fasher, the last army stronghold in North Darfur, ending an 18-month siege marked by humanitarian crises and civilian abuses. Witnesses report mass executions, sexual violence, and widespread looting during the takeover.

According to the Sudan Doctors Network, at least 1,500 people were killed in the first few days, while the UN estimates hundreds of thousands remain trapped in the city. Satellite images released this week appear to show mass graves being dug, with more than 80,000 people already displaced.

The International Criminal Court has begun preserving evidence for future prosecutions. The RSF denies the scale of atrocities but admits to some misconduct by its fighters, who have been battling Sudan’s army since April 2023 in a conflict that has devastated the country.
