Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces have agreed to a humanitarian truce proposed by a U.S.-led group known as the Quad, marking a potential breakthrough in the country’s two-year civil war. The move comes days after the RSF seized El-Fasher, the last army stronghold in Darfur, following an 18-month siege.
In a statement, the RSF said it looks forward to implementing the agreement and discussing a permanent ceasefire that tackles the roots of Sudan’s conflict. The army, however, insists any truce must include the RSF’s withdrawal from civilian areas and disarmament.

The war, which erupted in 2023, has killed at least 40,000 people and displaced 12 million. U.S. officials say the truce could begin soon, paving the way for a longer political process aimed at restoring stability.
