The Super Eagles have begun preparations for their crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin Republic on Thursday, with Spain-based forward Sadiq Umar as the only player yet to join the squad. The 22-man team gathered at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny for their first training session, where they aim to build on their current position at the top of Group D.
Nigeria leads the group with 10 points from four matches, having scored seven goals and conceded none. They return to Abidjan’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny with confidence, where they’ve previously triumphed over teams like Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, and Angola in the 34th Africa Cup of Nations.
However, the Super Eagles are mindful of their recent 2-1 loss to Benin at this same venue during the World Cup qualifiers. Benin is using Abidjan as their temporary home ground due to stadium issues back home.
With a strong record so far, the Super Eagles are looking to secure another win and strengthen their position in the race for AFCON qualification.
