Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following surgery for an abdominal injury sustained during Nottingham Forest’s 2–2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground. The incident occurred on Sunday after the player collided with the goalpost.
The 26-year-old was intubated on Tuesday evening following the first phase of surgery. Nottingham Forest said Awoniyi is “recovering well”, with the club describing the incident as a reminder of the physical risks in the sport.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is understood to have entered the pitch after the match to express concern to manager Nuno Espirito Santo over the handling of the injury.
