Nigeria could face widespread economic disruption in 2025, telecom operators have warned, citing challenges in maintaining vital infrastructure. Key sectors such as security, commerce, healthcare, and education, heavily reliant on telecommunications, are at risk.
The alarm was raised by the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, during a stakeholders’ end-of-year gathering. He cautioned that without urgent reforms, the nation could see ‘service shedding’, which is a situation where operators are unable to provide consistent services in certain areas or times, leaving millions disconnected.

Mr Adebayo warned of significant economic fallout, with businesses struggling due to poor connectivity, stalling growth and innovation. He called for immediate policy reforms, including tariff adjustments that reflect the economic realities of delivering telecom services.
The sustainability of Nigeria’s telecom sector, he stressed, depends on swift and decisive action to avoid these dire consequences.
