Telecom operators warn of nationwide service disruption over diesel supply blockade

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria has warned of possible nationwide service disruptions following reports that members of petroleum unions are blocking access to diesel depots in Kaduna, Lagos, and Delta states.

ALTON chairman Gbenga Adebayo said the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria are preventing fuel deliveries to thousands of telecom sites run by IHS Towers. He linked the action to a dispute over alleged diesel misappropriation involving two NOGASA-affiliated companies.

The telecom body warned that more than 16,000 sites, which support mobile, internet, banking, emergency services, and national security operations, could be affected. It stressed that telecom facilities are classified as Critical National Information Infrastructure under Nigerian law.

ALTON has appealed to the unions to resolve the matter lawfully and called on the national security adviser, the Nigerian Communications Commission, and other authorities to intervene to prevent a communications blackout.
