Tems Reflects on Early Struggles and Pushes for Women’s Visibility in Music

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Tems has spoken about the challenges she faced at the start of her career, saying it was difficult to be recognised or taken seriously in the industry. In an interview with CNN, the 30-year-old singer said she often felt overlooked and unsupported during her formative years as both a producer and performer.

Tems said staying authentic remains central to her music, describing it as the foundation of her creative journey. She explained that her new initiative, ‘The Leading Vibe’, was inspired by her early struggles.

The platform aims to empower women working behind the scenes in music, including producers, managers, and sound engineers. Tems said the project seeks to make female talent more visible and plans are underway to expand it beyond Nigeria, starting with Kenya.
