Political tensions are mounting in Bayelsa State ahead of a planned rally in support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, scheduled for 12 April.
The event, organised by a group known as ‘The New Associates’, will also mark the inauguration of its Bayelsa chapter. However, Governor Douye Diri has warned that the rally could spark violence, citing the volatile political climate in neighbouring Rivers State.

Lead organiser George Turnah has dismissed the concerns, insisting the event will proceed as planned. In response, supporters of the governor have scheduled a counter-rally at the same venue, on the same date and time.
Last week, Governor Diri met with Bayelsa elders and security chiefs, cautioning that the pro-Wike gathering could escalate tensions in the state.
