The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of the foreign component of its Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS) Intervention, citing the high cost of overseas training and cases of scholars absconding.
This decision was conveyed in a letter signed by TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, and addressed to the heads of beneficiary institutions, including vice chancellors, rectors, and provosts. The letter, dated November 25, 2024, stated that the Board of Trustees had approved the measure due to “excessive costs” and the increasing number of scholars who fail to return after completing their training abroad.

The foreign training suspension aims to redirect resources to domestic academic capacity development while addressing challenges posed by the abscondment of scholars. Beneficiary institutions have been urged to adjust their academic staff training programmes accordingly.
The suspension will take effect on January 1, 2025.
