Thirteen pupils killed in South Africa school minibus crash

Thirteen schoolchildren have been killed after a minibus carrying pupils to school collided with a truck near the industrial town of Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg, according to South African police.

Police said the driver of the minibus appeared to have lost control while attempting to overtake other vehicles, with the death toll rising after one injured child later died in hospital. Several other pupils were seriously hurt, officials said.

Gauteng provincial education minister Matome Chiloane said the victims included pupils from both primary and high schools, while images from the scene showed the crushed minibus and distraught parents gathered behind police cordons.
