President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees seeking elective positions in the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026. The directive was announced in Abuja in a statement by Dewan Goshit, head of information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Goshit said the decision is in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries. He explained that the directive applies to ministers, advisers, assistants and heads of government agencies intending to contest elections.
According to the presidency, affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation before the deadline. The measure is intended to ensure compliance with electoral laws and promote fairness in the political process.
