President Bola Tinubu has requested the House of Representatives to confirm Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The request, read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Tuesday’s plenary, aligns with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.
President Tinubu praised Oluyede’s professionalism and contributions to the Nigerian Army, describing him as “well-suited” for the role. He urged lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process.

Oluyede was appointed acting COAS on October 30 following the illness of former army chief Taoreed Lagbaja, who later passed away on November 5. Now promoted to lieutenant-general, Oluyede previously served as the 56th commander of the Infantry Corps.
The president has also forwarded Oluyede’s name to the Senate for ratification of the appointment.
