Tinubu Seeks Overhaul of Legal Profession with New Bill Before National Assembly

President Bola Tinubu has submitted the Legal Practitioners Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill to the National Assembly, signalling a major push to reform the country’s legal profession. The proposed law aims to strengthen ethical standards, improve accountability, and widen access to justice nationwide.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read the President’s letter on Tuesday, said the bill introduces key changes, including the issuance of practice licences, a mandatory two-year tutelage for new lawyers, and compulsory continuous professional development. Lawmakers are expected to begin consideration immediately.
