Tinubu Signs Amended Electoral Act 2026 Into Law

President Bola Tinubu has signed the Electoral Act 2026 Amendment Bill into law, ahead of the 2027 general elections. The ceremony was held at the State House in Abuja, days after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the election timetable.

The bill was passed by the National Assembly after weeks of debate on electoral reforms and protests from civil society groups and opposition parties that called for mandatory real-time uploads from polling units.

The President urged for a questioning of broadband capability in the call for electronic transmission and stressed that the voting system in Nigeria is still largely manual. The new law aims to improve transparency, logistics and overall election management.
