Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, warning that the administration’s neoliberal reforms have wiped out Nigeria’s middle class and worsened poverty levels. Speaking in an interview, he noted that despite Tinubu’s acknowledgement of economic hardship, his approach has made life increasingly difficult for many citizens.
Falana said the government’s privatisation efforts and adherence to policies from institutions like the IMF and World Bank undermine the fight against income inequality. He called for a review of these reforms and urged the government to prioritise support for vulnerable Nigerians, especially those in rural areas.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria added that most Nigerians now struggle to afford basic meals and that the fuel subsidy removal has further worsened living costs across the country. He insisted that continuing on this path without adjustments would only increase hardship.
Falana also called for the urgent implementation of social welfare laws, such as the National Social Investment Programme, to cushion the effects of the economic crisis. He urged the President to work with state governors to codify and expand these initiatives to tackle widespread poverty.
