Troops Foil Boko Haram Attacks in Lake Chad, Kill Top Commander

Troops of the Nigerian military have repelled coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in Monguno and Bitta communities in the Lake Chad region, killing scores of terrorists including a senior commander, Ibn Khalid. The midnight assaults were foiled following a fierce gun battle around 2:30am.

Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, said 17 other insurgents were killed in further operations across Sambisa, including parts of Adamawa and Borno states. He added that several terrorists fled with gunshot wounds as troops pursued them along the retreat path.

Recovered items from the terrorists include AK-47 magazines, RPG bombs, special ammunition, and a camcorder used by the group’s media team. A terrorist cameraman was also among those killed in the failed infiltration.

Monguno, the operational base of the Multinational Joint Task Force in northern Borno, remains under military control, though many communities in the Lake Chad area are still deserted and awaiting reconstruction.
