The Confederation of African Football (CAF), former teammates and many Nigerians have paid tribute to Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong following his retirement from international football.
Troost-Ekong, in an emotional message posted Thursday on X, said stepping away from the national team after earning 83 caps, playing in five major tournaments and captaining Nigeria was “beyond his wildest dreams.” He thanked the country for embracing him and said it was time for the next generation to take over.
Reacting, Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi described the defender as a “big leader,” noting that even when Troost-Ekong was not playing regularly, his voice, guidance and influence remained vital to the team’s unity. He wished him success in the next phase of his career.
