The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has demanded a public apology from the management of the Dangote Petrochemical Refinery over the dismissal of more than 800 workers. TUC Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, said the refinery violated the constitutional rights of the affected employees.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Toro explained that the dispute stemmed from workers’ decision to join the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, which is an affiliate of the TUC. He said both unions had attended a meeting at the Ministry of Labour earlier this month, but the matter remained unresolved.

Mr Toro accused the refinery of refusing to address the central issue of unionisation, alleging that it victimised workers who signed up with PENGASSAN. He argued that employees have the right to join a union of their choice and called for their immediate reinstatement.
The TUC leader also criticised the refinery for what he described as preferential treatment of expatriates over Nigerian workers. He urged the company to respect labour rights, adding that unions had supported Aliko Dangote in the past and would continue to defend workers against unfair labour practices.
