TUC Rejects Planned 5% Petroleum Tax, Warns of Nationwide Resistance

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has condemned the Federal Government’s proposed five per cent tax on petroleum products, describing it as an anti-people policy that would worsen hardship.

The union said Nigerians, already battling fuel hikes, food inflation, and a weakening currency, should not be subjected to further economic pressure.

According to the TUC, the measure would cripple businesses and drive more citizens into poverty. It also accused the government of treating Nigerians as ‘sacrificial lambs’ for its economic policies. The union said instead of relief and job creation, authorities were bent on deepening hardship.

The workers’ union demanded the immediate withdrawal of the plan, warning that strike action and mass protests were on the table if ignored. The union also urged civil society groups, professional bodies, student unions, and religious leaders to prepare for collective action against what it called economic injustice.
