Tyla Distances Herself from Tiwa Savage’s Apology Over ‘Coloured’ Remark

South African Grammy winner Tyla has distanced herself from an apology issued on her behalf by Nigerian star Tiwa Savage over the use of the term “coloured.” The word, commonly used in South Africa to describe people of mixed heritage, carries a deeply offensive history in the United States.

Savage apologised to African-Americans during a US media appearance, presenting herself as Tyla’s elder. Her intervention drew sharp criticism in South Africa, where many felt she had no authority to speak on their identity.

During a performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, Tyla signalled that she rejected the apology, telling the crowd she was “not sorry.” The statement sparked widespread support at home, with many praising her for standing firm on her cultural identity.
