U.S. Trade Office Criticises Nigeria’s Import Ban on 25 Products

The United States Trade Representative has criticised Nigeria’s import ban on 25 product categories, saying it limits market access for American exporters. In a post on X, the USTR described the policy as an unfair trade practice affecting key sectors such as agriculture, pharmaceuticals, beverages, and consumer goods.

The agency stated that restrictions on items like beef, poultry, pork, fruit juices, medicaments, and spirits have created significant trade barriers, costing U.S. businesses export opportunities and revenue in the Nigerian market.

Among the banned products are live or frozen poultry, pork, beef, spaghetti, fruit juices in retail packs, sugar, vegetable oil, soaps, beer, sanitary plastics, tyres, and cement. The list also includes waste pharmaceuticals, paper boards, and recharge cards.

This comes less than a week after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs affecting imports into the U.S., with Nigerian goods facing a 14 percent duty. Meanwhile, Nigeria has announced plans to halt the importation of solar panels in a move to boost local production and support clean energy transition efforts.
