British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom will formally recognise a Palestinian state, more than a century after the Balfour Declaration and 77 years after the creation of Israel. He said the move was aimed at preserving the possibility of peace and a two-state solution amid worsening conflict in Gaza and the West Bank.
The decision, taken alongside allies such as Canada and Australia, comes as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepens, with Israel’s military campaign causing widespread destruction, displacement, and famine. Ministers said recognition affirms Palestinians’ right to self-determination while underscoring that Hamas will have no role in a future state.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the move as historic, while Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy stressed it would not create a state overnight but sought to keep alive prospects of a negotiated peace settlement.
