The United Kingdom has rejected Nigeria’s request to allow former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu serve the remainder of his prison term in Nigeria. Ekweremadu is currently jailed in the UK after being convicted in March 2023 for organ trafficking and sentenced to nine years and eight months.
A delegation sent by President Bola Tinubu — including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi — met UK officials earlier this month to seek his transfer. However, UK authorities told the British press that the request was declined over concerns Nigeria could not guarantee he would continue his sentence upon return.
