Ukraine has accused Russia of recruiting more than 1,700 Africans to fight in its war against Ukraine. The allegation was made on Wednesday by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during a news conference in Kyiv with Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Sybiha said the Africans, from 36 countries, were lured through fraudulent schemes and were being deployed on the front lines. Russia has denied illegally recruiting foreign citizens.
Ghana’s Ablakwa said many of the Africans had no military experience and were misled by promises of employment. He appealed for a ceasefire and requested the release of two Ghanaian prisoners of war captured while fighting for Russia.

South Africa has recently repatriated 11 nationals who were similarly lured into the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed discussions with Ablakwa on preventing the recruitment of Africans into Russia’s armed forces.
