Ukraine and Russia Mark 1,000 Days of War, Vow to Fight to Victory

Ukraine and Russia have both vowed to continue their fight to victory as they mark the 1,000th day of war. In a statement released on Tuesday, Ukraine reaffirmed its determination, insisting it will “never submit” to Moscow’s invasion. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that the Russian military would be held accountable for violating international law.

Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, speaking to the United Nations Security Council, called the milestone “a very big number,” pointing out that it demonstrated both Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Russian aggression and the international community’s failure to prevent such conflicts. Yevheniia Filipenko, Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, in an interview warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not seeking peace, despite growing speculations about potential peace talks with an incoming U.S. administration.

In response, Russian President Putin approved an update to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which states that Moscow may consider using nuclear weapons if it faces a conventional missile assault, especially one supported by a nuclear power. This update comes amid reports that the U.S. might allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles against Russian targets.

Putin’s spokesman expressed confidence in Russia’s ultimate victory in the ongoing “special military operation,” which began with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
