UN accuses South Sudan leaders of looting billions amid hunger crisis

A United Nations inquiry has found that Israel’s war in Gaza amounts to genocide, nearly two years after the conflict began. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory said Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and President Isaac Herzog, bear responsibility.

Commission chairwoman Navi Pillay said the findings were based on statements and orders given by Israeli officials, supported by circumstantial evidence. The report concluded that Israeli authorities and security forces had genocidal intent to destroy Palestinians in Gaza, in whole or in part.

Israel rejected the findings. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the report as “fake” and accused the commission of acting as “Hamas proxies”. Israel’s permanent representative to the UN, Daniel Meron, also condemned the conclusions, calling them “scandalous” and “libellous”.

The commission called for a permanent ceasefire, full humanitarian access to Gaza, and an end to what it described as Israel’s policy of starvation. The inquiry was released as Israeli forces intensified attacks on Gaza City, where medical officials reported at least 62 Palestinians killed on Tuesday.
