UN Chief Visits Rohingya Camps as Food Crisis Looms

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has visited Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh amid warnings of drastic food ration cuts next month.

His visit to Cox’s Bazar follows a UN World Food Programme (WFP) announcement that food vouchers for refugees may be reduced from $12.50 to $6 per month starting in April due to funding shortfalls. This follows the suspension of USAID operations, with the US previously providing nearly half of the WFP’s budget.

UNICEF has warned that children in the camps are facing the worst levels of malnutrition since 2017, with admissions for severe malnutrition treatment rising by 27 percent last month compared to the previous year.

Bangladesh’s interim government hopes Guterres’s visit will draw global attention to the crisis and boost international aid efforts for the more than one million Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps.
