The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Turk, has expressed his profound dismay following a lethal Israeli strike in southern Beirut on Monday. The attack, which took place near the Rafic Hariri Hospital, Lebanon’s largest public health facility, has claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals, according to the Lebanese health ministry. This major hospital, located just a few kilometres from the heart of the city, is a critical lifeline for many.
In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, Mr. Turk called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident. He emphasised the necessity of upholding the core tenets of international humanitarian law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians in conflict zones.
Disturbingly, the High Commissioner noted that among the victims were four children, and an additional 60 people were injured during the attack.

This tragic escalation comes after nearly a year of intense conflict in Gaza, with Israel now shifting its military operations towards Lebanon. The Israeli government has pledged to secure its northern border, a move intended to allow the safe return of tens of thousands of Israelis who have been displaced by the ongoing cross-border hostilities.
