The United Nations Special Rapporteur, Ben Saul, has condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, describing the seizure of civilian aid vessels in international waters as a breach of maritime and humanitarian law. Nearly 500 delegates aboard the flotilla were detained by Israeli forces while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Among those held are six South Africans, including Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela. Legal representatives from Adalah have confirmed the detainees remain in good spirits despite reports of mistreatment and denial of food and medication.

South African activists have urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to secure their release and take firmer action against Israel, including cutting diplomatic and trade ties. The flotilla organisers say the incident exposes Israel’s intent to maintain the blockade on Gaza and prevent life-saving aid from reaching civilians.
