The United Nations says at least 40 people have been killed in an attack on a funeral in the city of El-Obeid, the capital of Sudan’s North Kordofan state. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, citing local sources, confirmed the incident but did not specify when it occurred or who was responsible.
The attack comes as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces appear set to launch an offensive on El-Obeid, which remains under the control of the Sudanese Armed Forces. Fighting in the region has intensified, with thousands fleeing after the RSF seized the nearby city of Bara and later captured El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.
The UN says more than 70,000 people have fled El-Fasher and surrounding areas following the RSF’s takeover. Human rights groups report widespread atrocities, including summary executions, sexual violence, and mass graves. Thousands of civilians are believed to be trapped in the conflict zones.

Sudan’s Defence Minister Hassan Kabroun said government forces will continue their fight against the RSF after the Security and Defence Council discussed a ceasefire proposal from the United States. The civil war, which began in 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced more than 12 million people across the country.
