The UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, IPC, has declared famine in Gaza, marking a turning point in the conflict. The classification – regarded as the gold standard in food crises – says more than half a million Palestinians are starving, with that figure set to rise sharply within weeks.
Aid agencies report widespread acute malnutrition, food deprivation and starvation-related deaths, meeting the IPC’s strict criteria for famine. Children, the elderly and the infirm are the most vulnerable.

Israel has dismissed the findings, accusing the IPC of bias, but UN bodies insist the famine is entirely man-made and avoidable. They say restrictions on aid, erratic approvals for convoys and targeted attacks on food distribution have left families desperate.
Secretary General António Guterres called the crisis a moral failure, urging an immediate ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access.
