The United Nations is set to reduce its presence in Gaza after five staff members from its Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA, were killed during Israel’s renewed military offensive.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said the decision had been taken by the Secretary-General, describing it as a difficult step at a time of escalating humanitarian needs and growing concerns over civilian safety.
Around a third of the UN’s international staff in Gaza, currently numbering about 100, will be withdrawn.
Despite the reduction, the UN reaffirmed its commitment to delivering aid to civilians in the region.
