UN Urges Calm After Deadly Clashes in South Sudan

The United Nations has called for calm following deadly clashes in South Sudan that resulted in civilian casualties and left a UN peacekeeper wounded. The fighting erupted between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPSF) and “armed youth” in Nasir, Upper Nile State, on 14 and 15 February, according to a statement by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Monday.

South Sudan, an oil-rich but impoverished nation that gained independence in 2011, continues to face instability marked by frequent clashes and political infighting. The UN did not identify the armed groups involved in the recent violence against the SSPSF, which is led by President Salva Kiir as part of the country’s unity government.

The statement noted that some fighters used “heavy weaponry,” leading to deaths and injuries among both civilians and armed personnel. However, it did not specify the number of casualties. A UN peacekeeper on a routine patrol was also injured in the attack following mortar shelling.

UNMISS has urged all parties involved to de-escalate tensions and prioritise dialogue to prevent further violence. The latest clashes underscore ongoing security challenges in the region as South Sudan struggles with peace-building efforts.
