The United Nations has warned that Israel’s war in Gaza has pushed the territory’s economy to the brink of collapse, threatening its ability to survive as a functioning society. A new UNCTAD report estimates that rebuilding Gaza will cost more than $70 billion and could take decades, noting that food, shelter and healthcare systems have been severely undermined.
The conflict, triggered by Hamas’s 2023 attack on Israel, has killed more than 69,000 people in Gaza and left the economy contracting by 87 percent, with per-capita GDP now among the lowest in the world.

UNCTAD is urging a coordinated global recovery plan, eased restrictions on trade and movement, and a universal emergency income to support Gaza’s population as humanitarian needs escalate.
