Students of the University of Abuja have rejected the federal government’s decision to rename the institution after former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, calling for an immediate reversal.
During a protest at the university’s main gate on Thursday, the students carried placards with inscriptions such as “We Stand for UniAbuja,” “Solve Hunger Problems, Not Renaming UniAbuja,” and “It Was Rejected in Lagos, We Are Rejecting It in Abuja.”

Speaking on behalf of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Comrade Nkem Silas urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the decision, citing potential psychological effects on students. He added that a formal rejection letter would be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education through the Vice-Chancellor.
Prof. Jeremiah Vambe, an alumnus and faculty member, echoed the concerns, warning of economic, legal, and identity-related consequences. Similarly, Comrade Adamu Abdulbasit, President of the Abuja Indigenous Students Association (AISA), said the name change would undermine the university’s historical and cultural identity.
