UNRWA Chief Urges Accountability for Violations Against Humanitarian Workers in Gaza
Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, UNRWA, has called for urgent investigations into what he described as a “systematic disregard” for humanitarian workers and facilities in Gaza.

Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini issued the plea on social media platform X, condemning the ongoing “horrors” in the region, more than 15 months after the assault on Gaza began.

He revealed that 258 UNRWA staff members have lost their lives, with nearly 650 incidents targeting the agency’s premises. At least 745 civilians sheltering in UNRWA facilities have been killed, and over 2,200 injured.

Mr. Lazzarini also highlighted that 20 UNRWA personnel remain in Israeli detention, alleging that those released reported systematic mistreatment and abuse. He stressed the urgent need for accountability, urging global leaders to act to protect humanitarian workers and civilians in Gaza.
