The United States has announced a new wave of sanctions against Iran, targeting ships accused of selling Iranian oil to fund Tehran’s ballistic missile programme. The move comes a day after US President Donald Trump renewed his threats against Iran during his State of the Union address.
The US Treasury says 12 vessels, along with several companies and individuals, have been blacklisted for their alleged role in Iran’s oil sales and weapons procurement. The sanctions will freeze any assets held in the United States and largely bar American citizens from doing business with those listed. Washington says the measures are part of its maximum pressure campaign aimed at curbing Iran’s weapons capabilities.

Tehran rejects the accusations and describes the restrictions on its energy sector as piracy. The United States has stepped up sanctions as it builds up military assets in the region, including aircraft carriers and fighter jets. Tensions have been rising since President Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement during his first term.
US and Iranian negotiators are due to meet in Geneva for a third round of talks this year.
