US President Trump Poised to Sign Order Dismantling US Education Department

US President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order today, setting in motion plans to dismantle the Department of Education.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has already begun cutting staff and reducing funding as part of the administration’s broader effort to decentralise control over education policy.

Trump had pledged during his campaign to shift decision-making powers to state governments, arguing that local authorities are better placed to oversee education. However, federal funding remains vital for low-income schools and students with special needs.

The order instructs McMahon to oversee the department’s closure, though key programs—such as grants for university students and support for disadvantaged schools—are expected to remain in place.

While the department’s full abolition would require congressional approval, the directive is expected to lead to deep funding cuts and significant job losses, further weakening the agency’s ability to carry out its mandate.
