The United States, yesterday, warned that any Gaza ceasefire by Israel would benefit Hamas, as the European Union considers a call for a humanitarian pause.
Speaking to reporters yesterday, the US State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said a ceasefire would, in his own words, give Hamas the ability to rest, to refit and to get ready to continue launching terrorist attacks against Israel.
Mr. Miller said that the United States was separately working to ensure a flow of humanitarian relief into Gaza, with a US envoy, David Satterfield, on the ground working on aid.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said earlier Monday that he expected the bloc’s leaders to back a call for a pause in fighting to let in aid.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, yesterday, called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire’ in Gaza, saying far too many civilian lives, many of them children, have already been lost.
Health authorities in Gaza say 5,087 Palestinians have been killed, including 2,055 children and 1,119 women since the Oct. 7 start of the war, with over 15,000 injured. Also 1,400 Israelis were killed in the Hamas assault which set things in motion, and 200 Israeli hostages taken.
