US Slaps 15 Percent Tariff on Nigerian Imports

Nigeria has been hit with a 15 percent import tariff by the United States under a sweeping executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The new measure is part of a revised global tariff policy targeting dozens of countries.

The White House said the changes follow the expiration of a 90-day window set aside to negotiate bilateral trade deals. Talks with most affected countries, including Nigeria, failed to produce agreements, prompting the rollout of the new rates on Thursday.

Nigeria was not originally listed in the tariff plan but was added as the policy evolved. The US had earlier imposed travel restrictions on several African countries, further straining diplomatic efforts.

Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar said Nigeria and other West African nations had hoped to expand trade with the US, but the restrictions presented major obstacles. Other African countries such as Ghana, Angola, and South Africa are also affected by the 15 to 30 percent tariffs.
