The United States has urged the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to protect Christian communities, following recent abductions in parts of the country. Speaking at a high-level US–Nigeria Working Group meeting in Abuja, the US Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, said recent attacks showed that more needed to be done to guarantee the safety of Christians, particularly in the North-Central states.
Ms Hooker welcomed the release of dozens of Christians abducted in Kwara State and from St Mary’s Catholic School, but expressed concern over the reported kidnapping of more than 170 Christians in Kaduna State on January 18. She said the United States was ready to work with Nigerian authorities to secure the release of abducted victims, investigate attacks and hold those responsible to account.

Responding, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, said the government under President Bola Tinubu had taken deliberate steps to confront insecurity, including intensified joint operations and expanded deployment of security forces to affected areas. He said investigations and prosecutions linked to attacks on religious communities had been strengthened, stressing that the protection of all citizens, regardless of faith, remains non-negotiable.
