Vice President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC) Ad Hoc Committee on National Electrification and the NEC Ad Hoc Committee on Polio Eradication at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He highlighted the critical need for a stable power sector to drive meaningful economic development in Nigeria.
Shettima stressed that addressing the power sector crisis is essential for Nigeria’s progress and urged leaders across the country to put aside differences in order to contribute to the nation’s industrialisation. He cited countries like Indonesia, India, South Africa, and Uganda, which have overcome energy challenges and are now leading in the post-industrial revolution.

He expressed concern that 40-70 percent of Nigerians lack formal access to electricity, but expressed optimism that the expertise of state governors and other committee members will drive positive change. Shettima also acknowledged the ongoing challenges in the national power grid, including frequent system collapses.
However, the Vice President remained hopeful that recent reforms in the energy sector, which have opened the market to new players and attracted both foreign and local investments, will bring significant improvements in the near future.
