Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for African-led responses to the continent’s security challenges, warning that terrorism, piracy, cybercrime and transnational crime can no longer be confronted in isolation.
Speaking at the 2025 African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit in Abuja, he stressed that Africa must shift from being a consumer of foreign technology to a creator of its own tools of defence. He highlighted the need for investment in cyber-defence, artificial intelligence, indigenous military innovation and coordinated intelligence-sharing.

Vice President Shettima said the summit offered an opportunity to rethink Africa’s defence doctrine, build trust among nations and strengthen cooperation in joint training, research and defence industry partnerships.
He urged the private sector to treat investment in security as vital to survival, insisting that continental defence must become the strongest bond uniting African nations.
