The National Assembly has suspended plenary sessions in both the Senate and the House of Representatives until Tuesday, 22 July. The decision was announced on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In separate messages, the leadership of both chambers extended condolences to the Buhari family, the government and people of Nigeria, and Buhari’s home state of Katsina. Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as elected president from 2015 to 2023.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, have arrived in London to receive the body of the late former president. They were received by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, among other officials.
President Tinubu directed the delegation to oversee arrangements for Buhari’s return to Nigeria for burial. The late president, known for his upright bearing and austere style, died at about 4.30 pm on Sunday following a prolonged illness.
