VP Shettima Urges States to End Open Defecation by 2030

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on governors across Nigeria’s 36 states to intensify efforts toward ending open defecation within the next five years.

Speaking at the 5th anniversary of the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet campaign in Abuja on Tuesday, Shettima, represented by Ibrahim Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, emphasised the importance of high-level political support for the initiative at the state level.

He highlighted the economic potential of Nigeria’s sanitation sector, noting its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda. VP Shettima said the sector could create jobs, provide alternative energy, and produce biological fertilizers.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, highlighted the campaign’s significance, noting its launch in 2019 to tackle Nigeria’s open defecation crisis, which affects an estimated 48 million people. He added that the anniversary aligns with World Toilet Day, underscoring the global urgency to end the practice.
