The United States will begin collecting tariffs totalling 104 percent on a range of Chinese imports from 5am on Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Beijing has strongly condemned the move. In a statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce accused Washington of engaging in what it described as unilateral economic coercion. Officials dismissed the measures as “groundless” and labelled them a form of “bullying,” while reiterating their resolve to resist what they see as pressure tactics from the United States.
The announcement follows a sharp exchange earlier in the week, during which Chinese authorities accused US President Donald Trump of engaging in political blackmail and pledged to “fight to the end” in what has become a protracted trade war.
