The World Health Organization (WHO) says China is under-representing the true impact of Covid in the country, particularly in the number of deaths recorded.
Dr Michael Ryan, WHO Emergencies Director, noted that China has increased its engagement with the WHO in recent weeks, but said the agency believes that China’s strict definition of a Covid death is too narrow.
As part of its new Covid policy, China changed its criteria for what constitutes a Covid death, meaning only those who die of respiratory illnesses are counted.
Dr Abdi Rahman Mahamud, Director of the WHO’s Alert and Response Coordination Department, has warned China may see another wave of infections as families gather for the Lunar New Year in a few weeks.
